One of the important objectives of the project was to help SMEs to expand their business with EU partners through provision of practical information, advice and useful tools related to exporting and attracting investment as well as to raise awareness about the benefits of internationalisation. An important step in this process was to become familiar with EU market developments and tools for efficiency improvement and export planning.

Carl Billson, IT Relationship Key Expert, commented: “It was a pleasure to meet again Ukrainian IT companies in London and to spend a short time (too short!) working together on our IT Trade Mission. All participants deserve congratulations for their professionalism and hard work! Everyone we met enjoyed Ukrainian enthusiasm and appreciation of the experience. I am confident that they will build on the contacts made and the confidence gained.“

In 2008 MBS was selected to participate in the EU funded project “Support to the Business Development of Ukrainian SMEs – International Dimension”. The overall project objective is to increase the competitiveness of the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector in Ukraine. You can see the leaflet and MBS profile developed by EU experts specially for this project.

The main selection criteria for SME to be entitled in EU project participation were the following:

  • The company meets the EU definition of a small and medium enterprise;
  • The company has been operating in eligible sectors: furniture, woodworking, machinery & equipment, IT services, for at least 12 months ;
  • The company has been registered in one of the eligible regions: Lviv, Kharkiv and Kyiv;
  • The company has high growth and export potential which will be assessed based on information provided in the application and verified during a visit to the company.
MBS was selected for the project along with other small and medium-sized enterprises from three economical sectors: information technology, woodworking/furniture and machinery/equipment. All participants are eligible to receive consultancy support and training programs oriented:
  • to establish commercial links with EU companies and promote long-term business partnerships;
  • to develop new strategic plans;
  • to create and implement new international marketing plans
Most jobs in the EU are provided for by Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) – companies of 250 employees or less. As such, creating a better business environment for SMEs is a key goal of the EU's Lisbon Strategy and the European Partnership for Growth and Employment.

For EU-Ukraine relations, SMEs have long been a key sector for co-operation. The EU-Ukraine Action Plan commits partners to working together to develop the Ukrainian legislative and administrative framework for SME promotion.

Currently the EU is supporting the ongoing project "Support to the Development of Business Capacity of Ukrainian SMEs – International Dimension" which will run until August 2009. The objectives of this project are to improve State policy in the sphere of SME support development, to facilitate commercial links between Ukrainian and with EU companies and to increase awareness of business internationalisation in the public and SME sector.
